Now that summer is finally here, you finally get to bust out all those cute summer fashions that you’ve had tucked away in the back of the closet for the past several months. Below are five basic fashion items that you must have to survive the summer heat.

Buy a Hat with Good Sun Coverage

Protecting your skin in the summer gets a lot of press, but protecting your head is just as important. Pick out a larger, broad-brimmed hat that will give your head and shoulders plenty of protection from direct sunlight. Choose a weave or material that also offers good ventilation to keep your head from sweating and to help you avoid heatstroke and dehydration.

Wear Dark Tinted Sunglasses

You don’t normally want to take fashion advice from old guys in white lab coats, but when it comes to eye protection, these guys actually know what they’re talking about. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends wearing dark sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, and nobody’s going to argue with that. Make sure that your shades are big enough to block light from all sides and that they specifically are designed to block those harmful UV rays.

Get Some Lightweight Tops

Lightweight shirts and sleeveless tops like those from free fly clothing are the order of the day during the summer heat. You want your tops to be loosely-fitting with materials that can breathe a little and wick moisture away from your skin while letting air penetrate for ventilation. While short sleeves and tanks seem like the obvious choice, it’s also a good idea to mix things up with long sleeves to give your arms a break from all that direct sunlight when spending long periods outdoors.

Put on Some Shorts or Capris

Shorts and capri pants will keep your legs cool during the warm weather too. Be sure to avoid dark colors, as these will absorb more heat and make your lowers all sweaty and icky. You don’t want that happening down there when it’s 90 plus degrees outside.

Opt for Lightweight Sandals

Everyone knows to wear lightweight, cool clothing during hot weather. But it’s easy to forget about keeping your feet cool until you’ve already left the house and it’s too late to do anything about it. Plan ahead and keep your summer footwear by the front door.

Lightweight sandals with open toes and heels are great for the summer heat, as long as you aren’t spending too much time in direct sunlight. Sunburned toes are no fun! If you need to wear regular shoes or sneakers for work or activities, then wear socks and shoes that are made from breathable materials. Socks and shoes tend to create a lot of friction and heat, so choosing the right materials can help keep your feet cool.

Choosing the right clothing for warmer weather isn’t really all that hard. The difficult part is that it’s sometimes easy to forget just how scorching it is out there while you’re getting dressed in your air-conditioned home during the first weeks of summer—until you’re out the door and burning up. So follow these five fashion tips to keep cool all summer long.
