3 Ways to Create a Style That Matches Your Body Type

Finding your personal style allows you to feel confident in any situation. In addition to your smile and confidence, people instantly notice the clothing that you wear, and the right outfit makes it clear that you value your appearance. However, working your way through the various fashion choices gets challenging, and you may need to change up your style as your body changes throughout each life stage. Learning these three tips makes it easy to create a style that matches your body type and attacks positive attention anywhere you go. Here are 3 ways to create a style that matches your body type

Identify Your Body Type

For years, the fashion industry has categorized different sizes and shapes of people’s bodies into specific types that simplify outfit selection. For instance, you may have a pear-shaped body if your bottom half is larger than the top, if you have fuller hips and narrower shoulders, or a fuller rear. Alternatively, you might have an hour glass shaped body if your waist dips in and the top and bottom are fairly proportionate. Apply body types are generally well-proportioned, with shoulders broader than their hips and a waistline that is not as well-defined. Athletic body types are usually less curvy, with similar hip and shoulder measurements and even weight distribution. You can often just eyeball your body type by looking in the mirror, or you can use measurements to figure out which parts are larger than the others. Regardless of your type, you have the ability to dress in a way that perfectly fits it!

Choose Clothes That Flatter Your Features

Knowing your body type helps you select clothing that highlights your best features and draws attention away from the others. For instance, choosing a skirt that hits your knees can help to bring people’s eyes to your slender calves. A dress with a slightly pinched in waist can help to make your figure look more like an hour glass. You might need to find plus size clothing or altered fits to accommodate your specific shape. When choosing tops, you can select from high necklines and dropped collars to either bring people’s attention to your chest or make it less prominent. A good tip for those without as many curves is to balance your broader upper half by accentuating legs and natural curves, such as with a form-fitting top and a breezy or billowy lower half choice. For apple or inverted triangle shapes, choose flowing tunics and V-necks to accentuate your bust, arms and legs.

As a general rule, dark colors have a slimming effect while lighter colors draw the eye to that part of the body. Naturally, you can never go wrong with a simple black dress, and shift styles tend to work well with every body type since they can hide tummies while fitting slightly around the waist. You can also pair a lighter colored top with a dark skirt to make the lower half of your body look slimmer. Classic colors are nice because they are, well, classic! You can’t go out of style with simple colors and cuts. While darker colors are a standby, don’t be afraid to experiment with pops of colors or whites and pastels if they fit your style.

Use Accessories for a Finishing Touch

As one final tip, you want to make sure that your accessories work with the clothing that you chose to match your body type. For instance, a drop necklace can help to brighten up a classic black dress and create a line that goes down the center of your body. You can also choose casual shoes such as sandals to add a relaxed tone to a dressier outfit that works well for occasions like resort stays and outdoor soirees. Bracelets draw attention to your waist when your arms are at your side, and necklaces and earrings draw attention to your jaw, neck and bust. A hair clip or flower pulls attention to your hair and face, while fitted jeans and skirts pull attention lower. Think about what you want to accentuate and play up your strengths!

Learning to dress yourself is not always as easy as it appears. With today’s constantly changing fashion trends, you will occasionally need to look for new ways to highlight your best attributes. As a general rule, dresses, skirts and flowing tops will always leave you looking amazing, and you can find in these the perfect size and silhouette to fit your body type.
