First up, let’s get to know the city, all all know Madrid is Spain’s capital, but here are a few things you may not know;

  1. Spain is famous for its Siestas, and the laid back lifestyle that often means evening meals are enjoyed late into the night. You assume then that the ‘Gatos’ or ‘Cat’s nickname applied to locals is something to do with their nocturnal lifestyles, but it actually dates back to the Arabic invasion, where a Spanish solider was witness climbing one of the city walls with the agility of a cat.

  1. Spain is generally regarded as a hot country, at least by most other Europeans. It’s seaside resorts are most popular with tourists looking to soak up some summer sun, but Madrid which is located in the centre of the country on relatively low ground can see temperatures soaring into the low 40s at the height of summer, the aforementioned siestas help locals escape the searing afternoon heat when it’s at its most ferocious.

  1. Traditional Spanish tourist resorts like Benidorm, Malga or Marbella may not be big on Bull-Fighting, but venture to the more culturally rich capital and you’ll find the arena that is generally regraded as the home of bull-fighting, Las Ventas. This is a must-see when visiting the city, and a great way to experience how the locals spend their leisure time. Las Ventas seats twenty five thousand people, and you should expect to pay more to sit in the shade!

  1. Madrid Zoo houses no less than four endangered Pandas!

  1. Madrid’s main airport is Madrid-Barajas. This is the world’s tenth busiest airport, but perhaps more interestingly, the route between Madrid and Barcelona is the busiest flight route in the world!

  1. If you thought the London Underground was confusing, then you may get just as lost in Madrid, the Madrid Metro network has 12 lines and over 200 hundred stations, but don’t worry, it is air-conditioned!

  1. The name Madrid comes from the Arabic ‘Magerit’ which means the place of many streams

  1. In 2009, Madrid ranked number 17 in an Askmen.com poll of the best 29 cities to live. Madrid was praised for its ‘general buzz’, laid back atmosphere, 3000 hours of sunshine per year, and for having the world’s third highest life expectancy. Oh and the two hour lunch breaks don’t go down too badly either!

  1. Tapas is probably recognised as  Spain’s ‘national dish’, you might be aware that Tapas consists of lots of small dishes including Tortilla (Spanish Omelette), Prawns in garlic sauce, Jambon (ham) and Patatas Bravas. What you may not know is that in the best Tapas bars, some of which are in Madrid, it’s pretty common to get it free – if you you buy drinks of course. Great food at a no extra cost – what’s not to love?
