What is an Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay is a document that makes the reader recognize that the author's argument is valid. The purpose of this specific essay is to ask a question and answer it with convincing evidence. In essence, this type of essay works to defend a specific point of view. The key, however, is that the subject of the argumentative essay has multiple sides, which can be explained, weighed and judged by relevant sources.

Argumentation strategies

When reflecting on how to approach your argumentative task, you should bear in mind that there are three main argumentation strategies on how to exactly argue a problem: classical, rogerian, Toulmin.

Classic argument

This argument structure goes back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. In this strategy, the arguer introduces the problem, provides context, clearly states his claim, provides key arguments backed by many tests, and overrides opposing arguments with valid data.

Rogerian Argument

Do I hate conflict? This may be the argumentative strategy on paper for you. In essence, this strategy works to identify aspects of commitment for both parties; This approach works to find coincidences and a final agreement between two parties instead of proclaiming a winner or a loser. Focus on this argument on the commitment and respect of all parties.

Toulmin Argument

Remember Spock? This is your kind of strategy; Toulmin approach focuses is solely on logic to persuade the audience. It is heavy on data and is often based on qualifying to reduce the focus of a claim to strengthen the writer's position.

Organizing the Argumentative Essay Scheme

An argumentative essay follows the typical essay format: introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. However, the body's paragraphs are structured a little differently than other paragraphs of the body. Surely, it's not something you can see in a cause-and-effect trial scheme. Learn more visit

While the introduction should still begin with a captive prayer that captures the reader's interest and forces them to continue reading and provide key background information, the following paragraphs focus on specific aspects of the argument. Let's start with the introduction.

Introduction Paragraph

As its name suggests, this paragraph provides all the basic information necessary so that a reader who is not familiar with the subject of argumentative essay can understand what it is about. A solid introduction should:

Begin with a descriptive title that communicates your position regarding the topic

Use an attention sensor to capture the interest of the audience

Rhetorical question

Personal anecdote

Provide the necessary background, including definitions of the relevant words

Finish with a thesis statement that communicates your position

Paragraphs of the body

Paragraphs of the body can vary in size from six to fifteen or more sentences. The purpose of these paragraphs is to support the statement of the thesis. The recommended areas of focus for body paragraphs within an argumentative document include:

Identifying and explaining the problem

Identifying the two (or more) sides of the problem

Explore the side that the writer believes is more appropriate than the others

Shoot by the other sides, with evidence

Recommend a course of action for the reader to take

An important way in which this test differs from other types is its specific nature. At the end of the reading of this essay, the public must clearly understand a problem or controversy and have enough information to make an informed decision on the subject. But what makes an audience make an informed decision? Several things!

It is not necessary to recount what has been discussed above: the conclusion is a generalization, the quintessence of the most valuable thing that is said in the work. Use introductory words "first", "second", "third" to list your own discoveries in the topic.
Thinking as a genre does not lead to definitive conclusions. You act as a researcher, making a hypothesis and gathering evidence for it, but the categorical is inappropriate here. Much better is the conclusion in which you urge the reader to think.

This is really interesting, thanks. I also recently looked for information on how best to present my arguments in an essay. I wrote a statement of purpose. This type of essay requires a clear, logical and reasonable structure, otherwise the text will not be convincing. I also found good article here  for those who don't know what text format to use for this college assignment. It seems to me that this can be useful for many students.
