How to deal with major mass merchandiser stores demands for meeting internal profit margins?

This is the time of year when the big stores, I don't have to name them but you all know who they are (one starts with the letter M), ask for money back from their vendors if the vendors' product sales did not meet the store's internal profit margins, after markdowns. If the vendor does not pay the difference, the store will threaten not to carry their styles the following season. However, there is no guarantee that they will even carry the styles the next season anyway. Many times it is not… Continue

However, as I was talking to her, she was driving around, looking for gas and food. She says her home sustained some damage, but generally everything seems to be ok for her and her family. I am thankful.

Please take a moment to… Continue

Chain Stitch Skipped Stitches - tip of the day

It is important to inspect the inside of your garments. Unless you inspect the inside of a chain stitch, you will not find drop stitches (skip stitches). Since a chain stitch is not a lock stitch, if there is just one drop stitch, the seam will ravel. A broken stitch may result in an open seam.

The visual sample inspection for workmanship during production includes at least the following steps:

Inspecting Items

Classifying Defects

Recording Defects

Marking… Continue

Inspecting Seams - tip of the day

Inspect all seams by grasping the fabric on each side of the seam and applying slight pressure to see into the seam. This method enables you to see needle cuts, open seams, and broken sewing stitches.

OK, I guess this blog message can serve as a quality assurance tip of the day...

The visual sample inspection for workmanship during production includes at least the following steps:

Inspecting Items

Green fabrics for green fashion: PLA(poly lactic acid)

currently used in a number of biomedical applications, such as sutures, stents, dialysis media and drug delivery devices. The technique process is the same to that of ordinary plastic products, which means usually it is injection molding or micro-injection, though the material of PLA is different from other plastic products.

The word Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. It includes a system of production, processing, distribution and sales that assures consumers that the products maintain the organic integrity that begins on the farm. These stringent standards put in place a system to certify that specific practices are used to… Continue

Uzbekistan Cotton Concern : September 2008

Recently published articles have highlighted the use of children in the harvesting of cotton in Uzbekistan. Obviously, this is a huge no no. Please check with your suppliers to make certain that they are not purchasing cotton in Uzbekistan.

I am absolutely not saying that every single cotton farm in that country employees child labor. However, reports indicate that the country in general is currently having some major concerns. If you are buying cotton, cotton yarn, cotton fabric,… Continue

Tommy Hilfiger Exclusive Sportswear

Tommy Hilfiger U.S.A has arranged an exclusive alliance with Macy's which leaves Macy's as the only U.S department store offering the company's men's and women's sportswear. It appears that other Tommy Hilfiger licensed product will not be exclusive to Macy's.

Regarding Tommy, my personal opinion is that this is a sign of weakness for the brand and not strength.

Regarding Macy's, my… Continue
