  • Hey Shantel, I'm glad we connected!

I'm certainly not the authority on starting a home business, but I'll share what works for me.

    • Have a game plan. Know what your style of sewing will be and who your customers are. Example~ will you be sewing for a younger group or a more mature group. Will you sew bridal or street clothes, etc. You get the picture.
    • Establish your fees and the method you will go about to get those fees. Will you charge by the hour o r will you charge by the task.
    • Establish your hours of operation and stick to that. Treat your home business as if you were in a standing building somewhere. Make it clear to friends and family that your business is to be treated just as that.
    •  Make sure you treat your business very professionally and not like a persona just laying around the home sewing. People are only gonna take you as serious as you present yourself.
    • Advertise well. Attractive business cards and/or fliers. Most times word of mouth and the great work you do is advertisement  enough.
    • Stay abreast of what's current and in season.
    • Mostly important, ALWAYS listen to what the customer wants.
    • Only do what 's in your expertise to do. Don't promise a customer something that you are not qualified to do. Don't be afraid/ashamed to say no. If you are networking with others ( which is not a bad idea), then refer the client to someone that handles their request.
    • Another very important thing to remember is to TAKE TIME OUT FOR YOU. Sometimes we can get so bogged down with the routine of business that we forget to care for us or family.

I hope this helps. If you have more questions, you know where to find me.
