Attention to detail is paramount when creating anything new, right from building a bridge to crafting a piece of garment. Unless you have the design plan or the blueprint ready for it you would not be able to plan your steps ahead. When you enroll in a fashion designing course at Inifd Gurgaon, you’ll learn that in the case of garment construction or fashion designing, pattern making plays a very important role in giving shape to the final product in exactly the same way as envisioned by the designer. It helps the designers in interpreting the designs and understanding them with technical ability. It creates a template that helps in tracing the shape of the garment which is then traced onto the fabric before it is cut out and assembled.
There are three main pattern making techniques that are used by fashion designers today.
• Drafting
The technique of drafting in fashion designing involves taking actual measurements of a person, dress or a dummy using sizing systems. These measurements are taken for different body parts including nape to neck to waist, neck, hip and waist circumference, armhole depth, and shoulder to bust, to name a few. The seam allowances are also taken into account along with finished lines to finish the pattern. The process of pattern making is done on brown paper and it gives the designer a basic structure of the dress. The brown paper pattern is then placed on the fabric and traced.
• Draping
In draping, a two or three-dimensional piece of muslin fabric is wrapped around a body form or mannequin. Once the fabric is positioned, it is pinned into place to give a fitted form. Fashion designers often prefer Muslin fabric in this form of pattern making as it is the most common, inexpensive and easy to work with fabric that can be used for draping.
