When starting or growing a clothing line there are 2 fundamental differences between the design process
of manufacturing small quantities and manufacturing large quantities.
Small (domestic) quantity manufacturing would be categorized by selling 1-300 by style.
Large (Import) quantity manufacturing would be categorized by selling approx 300 - 600 by color by style.
There are many pros to both.

Small Quantity (Domestic) vs. Large Quantity (Import) Manufacturing:

SMALL QUANTITIES
Usually produced domestically
Quick development & shipping time
Test markets with small quantities before committing to a lot of inventory
Minimal to no cost for producing prototypes
Larger cost of goods & labor for production of line
Limited fabric & color choices
Communication with factory is easier due to time zones and language
Easier communication means less upfront work and organization

LARGE QUANTITIES
Usually produced Import
Slow development & shipping time
Must commit to large inventory and have history or faith in sales
Larger up front cost & fees for producing prototypes
15% -50% cost of goods & labor compared to Small Quantities
Unlimited fabric & color choices
Communication with factory is more difficult due to time zones and language
Difficult communication means more upfront work and organization
