While you might not realize it, the type of socks you wear can make or break your hiking trip. If you wear the wrong type of socks, you’ll run into painful blisters or even foot damage, as well as be uncomfortable during the rest of your trip. To avoid these issues, read on to learn how to buy the best socks for hiking, so you can enjoy every step of your next hike.

Why Choose Merino Wool Socks?
Merino wool is among the best natural fibers available for fabrics. Soft and warm, it provides insulation even when wet, wicks moisture away from your skin, and doesn't overheat or suffocate. If you are going to buy new socks for hiking, you should definitely go with merino wool socks. I recommend Wigwam brand as an affordable choice; you can find them in a variety of heights and sizes.

What to Look For In Merino Wool Hiking Socks
Hiking can be a strenuous activity, and because it requires frequent exposure to water and dirt, you need high-quality socks that are able to keep your feet dry, protect you from blisters, provide relief from fatigue, and prevent infection. Merino wool hiking socks are worth their price tag; they're long-lasting and comfortable on your feet during hikes.

How to Wash Your New Pair of Merino Wool Hiking Socks
Many hikers prefer Merino wool hiking socks because of its natural moisture-wicking, antimicrobial and odor fighting properties. These features help keep your feet at a healthy temperature on long trips. In order to ensure you are taking care of your new socks, it is important to know how and when you should wash them. Never wash them in the washing machine or dryer! You will shrink them or break down their fibers and ruin any positive attributes.

Should I Get Crew Length or Ankle Length?
The best hiking socks can be made of two different kinds of fabric: wool or synthetic. Wool is a natural material, while synthetic fibers are manufactured materials. While it might seem like there are too many options, you can narrow down your search by deciding which one feels better against your skin and does a better job wicking moisture from your feet.

  • Merino wool socks is not only amazing for hiking, but pretty much for any outdoor activities(camping, hunting, fishing). It has become a staple of my hunting clothes(usually taking 2-3 pairs with myself while hunting in case first pair gets wet). Can definitely recommend!
