How do Showroom owners generate income?

Hello,

I live in NYC and have always thought about running a showroom where I showcase new and upcoming designers. I am wondering how showroom owners generate income? Especially when new and upcoming designers aren't making much money and cannot afford generous fees to the showroom.

Does anyone know or have experience working in a showroom?
