Current Delay in Bangladesh June 2007

This forum post is in NO way saying that it is more risky to produce clothing In Bangladesh then in other countries. The point is that their is un-anticipated risk when producing garments in "any" country. Below is a brief comment on a current situation in Bangladesh which can effect the delivery cycle of garments that are currently in production (June 2007) Due to a cyclonic storm formed by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, heavy downpour for the last 48-72 hours paralyzed business activities in the Port City of Chittagong. The heaviest rainfall in over a quarter of a century saturated the hillside in and around port city and at least least 95 people were killed and more than 200 injured by electrocution and landslides. Many areas including the commercial offices were out of power which resulted in total shut down of communications. The railway tracks were reported submerged at a few places disrupting train service between the port city and rest of the country. Movement of cargoes for export shipments on hand is badly suffering as the port remained inoperative yesterday and there was no movement of ships. Almost all Off-Dock Container Freight Stations were also submerged and remained inoperative. We are sure that Bangladesh will be back on its feet shortly... If you have any comments on issues that can cause production delays in other countries, please keep us advised. This type of information is good to take into account when planning production.
