Why on earth do we follow trends?

do we follow fashion trends because: a. superior authorities in the industry have decided that 'this is what looks good' and we trust their tatse, so we go along with it b. feel the need to be 'in' c. think we actually really like that style, 'it just happens to be trendy right now' d. believe it is important to be 'up to date' e. all of the above (if that's possible) food for thought.
