How to become a Fashion Publicist?

I would like to become a fashion publicist in the near future. How can I prepare myself for the career? What qualities do I need to sharpen in order to be successful in the industry? And, what should I expect from being a fashion publicist?

Well Talysha, I work in the field of fashion pr and brand management, I have found that many of the people that I consider peers don't have degrees in PR, rather a knack for quality garments and relationship building. I think a good publicist always exudes charisma and has a natural gift of gab. I am a firm beleiver that certain personalities fit better with specified careers. A PR Director usually has great analytical skills, tactful usage of words, and the ability to filter fluff and get down to the bare essentials of copy. From my experiences a good publicist is both a great copywriter and marketers with a keen seen of judgment and a "way with people". Great publicists know how to make more friends than they would ever need under normal circumstances and a compelling to highly sought after people. What this all means is not every publicist is the same but in my experience, the true performers are great at selling something in the shortest span appropriate while also adequately representing their client. Keep in mind that publicity is a form of promotion and the both line lays with whether the client has received appropriate press or equally influential attentional. I would suggest that you hone your writings and cultivate your vocabulary while also paying attention to human reaction to adverts vs. editorial reviews. In my opinion editorials from a respect journalists are a better form of advertisement than any creative.

I am in fashion PR. I have a degree in Journalism and English and I think this gave me a sold background for PR. Still, as long as you have a college degree, experience, attitude and drive are the most important. Try to take an internship in fashion journalism (editorial) or fashion PR and that will get your foot in the door no matter what you are majoring in. You MUST have an internship on your resume before you get your first job, I cannot stress how important that is. Research, call and apply to PR firms that interest you. Start a blog, so you can have an example of your writing skills/style and show interest in the industry. Qualities of a successful fashion publicist: patience, assertiveness, knowledge of fashion/trends/clients, and WONDERFUL writing skills are very important. Also, do not expect it to be a glamorous "Devil Wears Prada" kind of job. There are some long hours calling journalists and other media. Good Luck!
