IADT Imagine Fashion Show 2010: The big day, the reveal, countless hours finally paying of in out 15 minutes of fame. The collaboration of Paula McClendon and Cynthyah Beamon and my friend the beautiful opera singer Brande Everette. Paula McClendon is a Detroit native. She started her fashion design studies at Murray Wright High School. While in high school she worked for a local designer Roz Dashardin in the downtown Detroit. After working for Ford Motor Company for 19 years, she decided to pursue her fashion design career at International Academy of Design and Technology. One of her major design inspirations come from the famous American Couturiere Chado Ralph Rucci and Italian born designer Valentino. She was the second place winner of the 2009 Imagine fashion show at IADT Detroit. Her win lead her to partner with Cynthyah Beamon for the 2010 Imagine Fashion show. Cynthyah Beamon is also a Detroit native. She is also a student at IADT Detroit. She went to Wayne State University before transferring to IADT Detroit. She also studied fashion design at Wayne State. She was the assistant seamstress to the head of costume design for the play Spunk which opened at the Attic Theater under the supervision of Jane Hooper of Wayne State University. She has been a freelance designer for almost 15 years. The women wear was from the creative mind of Paula. Her creations were one of a kind couture pieces that were handmade and took up to 200 hours to create. She designed each piece, created the pattern and constructed each piece with masterful precision. Cynthyah made the tailored menswear. Although IADT Detroit does not teach menswear, she decided that there was a missing aspect from the fashion design department. She was the only one to take the challenge of menswear and taught herself through months of research. Together Paula and Cynthyah created a visual masterpiece which was inspired by opera’s new and old. To add to the ambience, they hire the opera singer Brande Everrett.
