Independent fashion designers are creative personalities; able to conjure up clothes that have never been seen before. But they rely on strikes of inspiration to produce work that is fantastic, rather than work that is okay.
Often designers will up the ante by decorating their shop windows and catwalks. One only has to wander down Bond Street at Christmas time to know that designers love to show off their abstract creativity. And catwalks are not just an opportunity to sell clothes, but an excuse to put on a flamboyant, exciting show. Collaborations with artists are essential to help create this.
More recently, it has become common to see artists exhibiting their works in areas usually dominated by art. The V&A museum is the new home to the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition, which was first shown back in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum. The V&A will also host a shoe exhibition and even the Imperial War Museum is recognising Fashion on a Ration.
