Who thrived on the sweaty Emmys red carpet

The Emmys resembled a Bikram Yoga room yet the stars managed to keep cool, composed and crease free as the mercury hit 41 degrees on the red carpet.

Colour, chains and humidity affected tresses were highlights of the small screen's night of nights, as was a Lucy Turnbull lookalike in the form of a blonde bob, beige spectacle wearing Jessica Lange.

Homeland's Claire Danes, in a blue sequin Prada number, and Scandal's Kerry Washington, in silver Marc Jacobs, led the mesh and chain gang with minders hurrying them down the red carpet to avoid burns as their metal gowns heated up under the sun and artificial lights.

Canary yellow was a popular choice with a glistening Taylor Schilling, star of Orange Is The New Black, looking like she had strolled in from Seminyak in a grecian Stella McCartney frock. Her co-star Danielle Brooks wore a billowing gold and royal blue Christian Siriano creation that Foreign Minister and avid West Coast Eagles fan Julie Bishop would approve of. Heidi Klum – who usually appears on the best dressed lists – opted for a lemon lace negligee inspired Versace outfit that didn't translate from the catwalk. The asymmetrical look appeared as if she had skinned Sesame Street's Big Bird en route to the ceremony.

Subtle side boob replaced the traditional front-on cleavage with Schilling, Danes, Lady Gaga, in a black Brandon Maxwell dress and Modern Family's Sarah Hyland, in plum Zac Posen, opting for bodices without boning.

Trousers for women were an ill-formed yet fashion forward choice considering the weather. The female cast of Mad Men wore the pants and commanded the red carpet better than Don Draper nailed sales pitches. Kiernan Shipka, who played Sally, rocked a yellow and black Dior ensemble, while January Jones looked like a feminine, non-plasticine Gumby in an emerald green, wide-leg jumpsuit by Ulyana Sergeenko.

In a "Stars - They're just like us!" moment it was refreshing to see no amount of blow-drying and product could tame Mother Nature with many manes looking slightly frazzled on approach to the Microsoft Theatre. Nominee Amy Poelher and Sofia Vergara embraced the balmy weather and less than ideal beauty conditions though and happily took the time to chat to sweat soaked reporters like Ryan Seacrest and Mario Lopez. While E! reporter Giuliana Rancic, who is used to sticky situations, didn't even need to wipe her brow despite wearing a full length, crystal embellished Ziad Nakad long- sleeved gown.
