Weddings in Kerala: God’s Own Country

There are two predominant in Kerala i.e. Nairs and Syrian Christians. The wedding customs of these two communities are vastly different because of their underlying religious beliefs. The Christian weddings are conducted in the church while Nair and other Hindu communities hold the wedding at either the bride’s home or a community hall.

The hallmark difference between these two types of marriages is the finalizing symbol in the form of the gold rings for the Christians and the Mangalsutra (a string of black beads interspersed with gold beads and having a gold pendant) for the Hindus.

It is interesting to note however, that the bride’s ensemble remains more or less the same in both cases. The bride wears a Kerala Kasavu saree which is basically a plain white or cream saree with a gold zari border. In the Christian community, the bride’s look is incomplete without a white, finely woven veil. Groom’s attires are, in contrast, vastly different in both communities. While grooms from the Christian community wear tailored suits that take inspiration from Western styles, Hindu grooms wear a kurta and veshti (a type of dhoti) with an angavastram (ceremonial cloth) draped around their shoulders. Modern influences however have changed the way Christian brides and grooms dress to their weddings. While the traditional groom’s suit was white, black and other bold colors like dark blue are very popular now. Brides too are beginning to wear bridal gowns as opposed to the Kasavu saree.

Gold features heavily in the bridal look, irrespective of which community she belongs to. Heavy gold necklaces in traditional designs along with ornate gold bangles are a common thread. Hindu brides also wear gold maang tikkas to complete their look. Brides also adorn their hair with strings of mogra flowers. The groom in the Hindu culture also wears gold in the form of a simple chain for the neck.
