Andhra Pradesh is a melting pot of cultures and communities and it is by virtue of this diversity that weddings in Andhra Pradesh take on a distinct cultural flavor. Everything from sarees, shararas, dhotis and kurta pajamas can be seen at weddings in this state.
The ceremonies and rituals undertaken by the bride and groom are elaborate and numerous. Starting from the engagement, Snaatakam (Graduation Bath) and Kaasi Yatra (or a visit to Kashi), there are other ceremonies like the Mangala Snaanam or the auspicious bath, Aarti or prayers, Ganesha or Gowri pooja or the offering of prayers to Ganesha and Gowr and the wearing of the Mangal Sutra or Holy necklace can all be seen. Each of these special functions requires the donning of different attires. However, there are certain common threads such as the 5.5 yard sarees worn by the women at the wedding that can either be in cotton or silk.

The shopping hub within Andhra Pradesh for wedding attire specifically is Dharmavaram. Dharmavaram silk sarees are splendid and are often chosen as the bridal attire, mainly because of the gold zari and silk brocading that runs through the length and breadth of the saree. More recently, women have begun favoring Kalamkari sarees more. Attendees generally prefer the Gadwal cotton saree as it is a symbol of high status. It is also made of the most expensive linen fabric in the world. The pallu and borders of the Gadwal are crafted in zari. Other popular choices are Ikat and Mangalgiri sarees. The men wear dhoti kurtas with minimal yet exquisite zari embroidery or sherwanis with extensive work all over the ensemble, where the latter is more popular. Hyderabadi pearls, which are famous throughout the country, are often paired with these attires.
On the whole, Andhra Pradesh’s textiles and embroideries have also found their way into international circuits as well.
