Wedding Ensembles in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh, also known as Dhaan ka Katora or Pot of Rice, is a melting pot for tribal culture in India. Some of the biggest tribes in the Deccan have found a place in this state and it is they who give a unique identity to the collective entity of costumes here. All festivals and grand occasions see the men and women dressed in colorful clothes, which is the essence of dressing in this state.

Pink Art Chanderi Silk SareeAs Chhattisgarh was once a part of Madhya Pradesh, many of its weaving techniques emerge from it and others have been acquired from other neighboring states over a period of many years. The prominent fabrics worn here are cotton, linen and silk. Besides weaving, the practice of Batik and Bandhani are characteristics of the textile heritage of Chhattisgarh.

The wedding rituals of Chhattisgarh in the rural areas are elaborate and distinct. Men from the tribal communities of Abhuj, Ghotuls, Halbas, Marias and Murias dress in a dhoti and turban-like headgear. Women’s dresses consist of either a full-length or a knee-length saree in vivid colors. People at the wedding can often be seen wearing elaborate headgears with special ornaments like cowries and peacock feathers. Both men and women also wear hand crafted ornaments in wood and metal.

In the urban areas, wedding attires are a lot more influenced by the cultures of the neighboring states. Batik silk, Maheshwari silk, Chanderi silk and Orissa silk are very popular. The Kachhora style of draping the saree, the Lugda saree and Polkha blouses are unique to Chhattisgarh and are worn at the time of special occasions.
