The wedding traditions and rituals of Tripura are steeped in culture and history with a lot of Bengali influences, as a majority of the population in this state is Bengali.
The Tripura wedding attire of the bride and groom are woven and handcrafted within the state and feature ethnic grandeur. The bridal outfit is known as the Rinai. It is a loose fitting, oversized garment that goes up to the knees. A shorter piece of cloth, known as Risa, is also worn by the bride. It is meant for the upper body and is draped in such a way that the torso takes on a definitive and beautiful silhouette. The drape of the ensemble is such that the upper portion of the garment goes around the underarms, thus fastening it properly. The fabric of the garment is a beautiful brocade that showcases several different traditional motifs and patterns.

The accessories to the bride’s garments are usually made of pure metals such as silver and copper or alloys like bronze. They are shaped like coins, and adorn the ears, necks, arms and wrists of the bride. Necklaces are designed using coins as well as beads strung together in exotic patterns. Flowers are also a popular adornment for the bride.
Over the years the costumes of the betrothed couple have evolved, based on personal preferences as well as innovations in the industry. For instance, women prefer blouses over the Risa and the use of ethnic sarees and salwar kameez sets is steadily on the rise.
