Take it back 30-years and no fashion lover worth their salt would tell you to wear trainers. Could you imagine Brigitte Bardot or Twiggy wearing trainers back in the ‘60s? Probably not. They simply weren’t considered a chic type of footwear. They were for exercise, and that was it.

Times have changed now, though. Today, you might even catch Brigitte or Twiggy wearing trainers when they're out and about. You will certainly see the Chelsea socialites wearing this style of footwear, and rightly so. When worn correctly, they offer a perfect balance between being chic and being laidback and relaxed.

As with most fashions, though, there are a few rules that you will need to stick to. The following four rules will help you to create marvellous outfits that will have heads turning wherever you go – in a good way, of course.

  1. Cropped Trainers Are the Go-To Style for the Fashionista.

Whilst you might occasionally see some of the fashionista out in their high-tops, the most common type of trainer that they wear are cropped trainers, like the Marco Tozzi trainers. This is because they show off the ankles, which, if you didn’t realise it, are actually a signifier for sexual health, and showing them off is considered “sexy”.

Team them with a pair of cropped jeans, trousers, or leggings, to highlight the ankles even further and really pull of this look in style.

  1. If You're Wearing Trainers for Fashion, Then Fashion Comes First, Not Function.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when buying trainers for fashion is looking in the sports shops. You shouldn’t be looking at sporty style trainers per se. Instead, you should be looking for the fashionable trainers, and you'll find those in the fashion shops.

Remember: Fashion over function.

  1. Neutral Palette Colours Will Be Better for Your Wardrobe.

It’s fair to say that many trainers are garish and outlandish. Sportswear tends to be bright and colourful – probably to counter the negative moods of having to work so hard! (Does anybody else not like exercise?). these are great for wearing down the gym, but they can be a bit too brash when wearing trainers whilst out and about showing off your wonderful taste in clothing.

Instead, stick to neutral palettes. Not only will they look more demure, and consequently more fashionable than sporty trainers, they’ll also go with more types of clothing. This will make them much more versatile as a style of footwear.

  1. Hide Your Socks or Wear Funky Tall Socks.

It’s better to wear socks that are not visible over the trainers. It gives a cleaner look and it ensures that you show off those sexy, sexy, ankles. If you do feel the need to wear socks, then something that the fashionista are doing right now is wearing funky socks that extend to their trousers (cropped trousers, so they’re actually normal sized socks). Some people are even wearing odd socks! But that might be a bit OTT.

Follow these rules and you’ll be up there with the fashion best.
