Weddings in the state of Manipur are known for their grandeur and opulence. The wedding costume of a Manipuri bride is perhaps the most distinguished of all Indian bridal costumes. The bride wears a traditional skirt known as a Raslila along with other garments which depends on the community or tribe of the bride. For instance, among the Chakmas, the bride wears a black and red sarong called pindhan whereas Magh brides wear thami sarong that covers most of the body. While the former garment is paired with a blouse called silum, the latter is teamed with a full-sleeved choli (or blouse).

Similar principles apply to the groom’s dress as well which can vary based on the tribe or community. However, common elements in the ensemble consist of a white kurta and dhoti along with a turban. A Santal groom’s outfit is referred to as panchi, matha and panchatat. Chakmas grooms generally wear a lungi with a shirt.
The level of accessorizing of Manipuri Wedding brides and grooms also depend on the community they belong to as well as the level of influence on the culture from other parts of the country. Many communities prefer their brides and grooms accessorized as minimally as possible, even though Manipur is known as the land of gems. One signature accessory however, is a garland of small flowers strung together on a single strand and a simple bindi for the bride.
