Vancouver Fashion eZine

Web zines have offered the opportunity for a growing number of people to try their hand at magazine publication without the huge finanacial resources needed in the past. Different from a blog in that there is a scheduled release date and regular features, this medium requires commitment and structure to survive the test of time. One success story is Vancouver Fashion eZine. Conceived in July 2007 - with the first issue on-line September 2007 - this fashion magazine covering only the local scene receives up to 80,000 hits per month and shows a growing U.S. readership. The concept? A mix. There are stories on well-established designers and some just starting their careers. Most months include the story of a fashion design student recently graduated from one of their 5 local programs accompanied by illustrations from their portfolio. As well, you will find articles on accessory designers, models, fashion artists (hair, make-up, styling), wardrobe consultants, runway choreographers, boutiques, illustrators and fashion show producers. While much of the photography is shot exlusively for the magazine by a growing number of artists, they welcome outside portfolios from their fashion professionals. This ensures the photography is a diverse selection of editorial styles.Although totally volunteer, the decision was made by the 2 partners last spring to publish a glossy high-end anniversary issue that would include all content from the first 2 years on-line. What followed were 4 months of hard work producing the graphics, selling limited advertising and organizing pre-sales to help with production costs. Due for release in mid-September 2009, this 258 page collectible issue is not only a thank-you to all those volunteers (also providing them valuable tear sheets) but a great resource for the fashion community as a whole. With only 16 full-page ads, the magazine is full of content - 131 articles by 13 writers with the accompanying photographry showcasing the work of 29 photographers, 52 fashion artists (hair, make-up, styling) and 73 models.Having stood the test of time, Vancouver Fashion eZine's journey will hopefully provide a template for others. Anyone familiar with trying to get press knows how hard it can be to gain media exposure. These unique publications open the door for many to get their foot in the door and a web zine makes sure that exposure can be wide spread. To check out Vancouver Fashion eZine on-line or to order a copy of the upcoming anniversary print edition, go to the website at www.vancouverfashionezine.com.
