Uttarakhand's Ethnic Wedding Celebrations

Kumaoni and Garhwali ethnic communities are among the most prominent ethnicities in Uttarakhand. As a result, the wedding celebrations held in this state closely reflect the mountain culture of these two communities. This is reflected in the fact that the wedding attires designed for the bride and groom is meant to be warmer than those worn in most other parts of the country.

Uttrakhand WeddingThe traditional attire of the bride is known as the Ghagra-Pichora. The Pichora is the blouse in the ensemble and this part of the garment is unlike anything else in Indian culture and is a heritage garment that is carried on through generations. The Pichhora is of utmost importance to a bride from this region and holds a place quite as special as the Khara Dupatta at a Hyderabadi wedding. This garment is made from hand and uses natural dyes in the coloring and printing processes. It features two colors i.e. saffron and red, which are considered the most auspicious colors throughout Hindu communities in India. Red symbolizes ‘conjugal life’ and ‘energy’ while saffron stands for all the holy and earthly elements. It is believed that combining these colors brings good fortune to the bride. Along with the Pichora, brides also wear a long skirt-like garment known as the Ghagri. The odhni or dupatta to complete the look is called a Rangwali that is embellished with gold and silver tattings. Those brides, who do not prefer this traditional garment, opt for opulent traditional sarees from this region. All accessories worn by the bride, both during and after the wedding, are made from either gold or silver. The Chareu is a holy necklace worn after marriage.
