The 1940s were an exciting time in the history of fashion. Even though war was brewing, fashion remained in the radar and women stayed fashionable.  During this war-torn decade, fashion was put to the sidelines yet designers’ imagination remained playful, insightful and creative. At the start of the decade, garments resembled more suit materials which were mostly stiff and tailored.  The outfits were distinctly utilitarian as the nations prepared to go to war. Years after the Allies won, softer fabrics were commonly sewn into the same A-line, one-piece dresses, with low round neck and v-neck collars which were sometimes embellished with tiny ribbons or large, soft bows.  Button-down dresses and belted waists were also common.  These dresses were paired with open toe, ankle-strapped shoes and a ribboned bandana on the head.

1940s revival in 2016 fashion

Fashion 40s style has come full circle and 2016 marked the high time it fired up creativity at the fashion runways of both Europe and America.  Below are 5 1940s-inspired dresses that were characteristically present and fashionably updated for the current times.  Own these looks and be the head turner where ever your summer adventuresome spirit is guiding you:

  1.  A-line dresses with v-neck collar and front bow.

Tommy Hilfiger had Gigi Hadid and several other models strut on the ramp wearing A-line dresses made of soft, some even shiny, fabrics with a puffed, short sleeve.  The ones with the long bows tied upfront were so feminine and chic. Similar collars and bows were seen on the Giorgio Armani runway.

        2.  Soft garment and crepe dresses.

Plain mid-calf, below-the-knee and full length dresses made with soft, flowy fabrics were an eye candy at the Michael Kors runways. The looks were accompanied with waists that were styled with either simple, garment beltsmade with the same fabric as the dress or, added in browns as separates. Giorgio Armani, likewise, made a beautiful long, cuffed sleeved dress in a floral red orange fabric that had a gartered waist and rounded collar neck.

       3.  Nautical stripes in blue and white.

With the onset of the war, fashion took inspiration from the navy, blue & white stripes. Women adorned everything from their collars, pockets, full-sized blouses and dresses in a variety of striped prints and designs. Ralph Lauren tastefully takes the nautical stripes to create classy and fabulous tops, skirts and full length  dresses.

      4.  Crop top with skirt.

Several 1940s icons like Olivia de Havilland and Ida Lupino wore the gorgeous crop top with skirt combination, showing a lot of cleavage and leaving a tiny, open cut between the crop top and a high skirt combination. Dolce and Gabbana had this trend going in all the incredible prints and fabrics.  Two of the most unforgettable ensemble from the collection included an eye-popping, brightly-colored pair with a bra cut top and a mid-calf, straight cut skirt made with a bandana silk fabric, accessorized with bandana turbans.  Another one is a similar ensemble made with black lace.

 5. Full length floral dresses.

Across the runways but, also most sophisticatedly executed by Dolce & Gabbana, were calf-length and full-length floral dresses.  Florals were boldy colored in reds and oranges set on highly contrasting backgrounds of blacks and whites. There were also softer, palette-colored counterparts, one of which ended up in Adele’s new music video for the song, “Send My Love (to Your New Lover)”.
