Continuing on from the trends set in last year’s ‘70s-infused Fall Collection, what’s set for this year is a romantic and eye-catching response to the retro theme - that's what the latest Fashion Weeks seem to be telling us anyway. What was really noticeable about last season is that all of the trends were quite distinctive from each other and the spring-summer selections look all set to carry forward this variety.
So which fashion fixes should you stock up on for the onrushing summer season?
From off-the-shoulder tops to shoulder cutouts and asymmetrical necklines, the summer season has some serious clean shoulder goals – after all, they say shoulders are the new cleavage! Shoulder cutouts define the neck, giving a slimmer shape overall, whereas off-shoulder dresses brave a clean look to highlight the shoulders and give a structured and straight sight to the overall look. Asymmetrical necklines be used to add a bit of further ‘70s groove to your outfit.
Oxford shirts have been in trend as far as men’s fashion is concerned for quite some time, but have recently been adopted into many a lady’s wardrobe, with the trend heading towards fever pitch this summer. Simple looking white (and off-white) shirts are remarkably versatile and can be worn as part of everything from day-to-day office attire to a part of an outfit for a night out. Pairing an Oxford shirt with a good pair of skinny jeans, leather pants or a pencil skirt and some opaque tights will create a killer look that screams “Confidence!”
The spring-summer season has also seen the emergence of some super striped attire. A whole lot of experimentation has been done with graphics and designs, meaning there’s bound to be something that will suit every taste. Chopped, curled, blocked and scattered lines offer up a dazzling variety of striped designs for dresses. Gone are the days when stripes were uniformed, plain and boring. This season, a stripe’s potential is limited only by one’s imagination!
Loud n’ proud sequins couldn’t be more in right now, but it’s just not the classic gold, silver and black that’ll be dominating this summer. These shiny materials have never looked so splendid – or colourful! A new breed of sequin dresses is emerging in a whole host of colours, meaning that there is a shiny party piece to suit every girl this season. That’s right, your wardrobe is about to get that little bit more shimmery!
Denim has gotten itself a bit of an upgrade this season. Typically known for being rugged and hard-wearing, the denim that is in vogue this summer is of a breezier variety altogether. Lighter materials make for a much more comfortable and breathable wearing experience. Experimental fringing, ripping and embellishment mean that there’s a suitable denim look to suit any fashion taste, from boho to glam – and just in time too, as music festival season is just around the corner!
Some other important highlights of this season are the netting and lace. The finer details of see-through pieces set a higher benchmark and bring new levels of confidence and boldness. Contrasting this line comes the focal point to show-off the middle section and sculpts an admirable hourglass shape. A focus on fitted jackets and oversized belts will give proper definition to a figure.
Accessories wise, comfortable flats shoes are a must. Sandals with lace and checkerboards are still in trend and we are thankful for this. The overall summer look is perfected with the addition of an accompanying bag. Depending on the occasion, you’ll find that an embellished clutch or a boho striped beach/ shopper bag will quickly become your new best friend as you strut outward into the new season in style and confidence.
