In the Beginning

Most people know that fashion deals with the art of clothing a person, but fashion truly began because of a need. Studies conclude that people started wearing clothes around 170,000 years ago. This puts clothed human beings somewhere in the second-to-last Ice Age. People were probably pretty cold at the time, and human beings lost most of their body hair by this time.

First Sign of Design

There is no telling when design became important to people. It is likely that most clothing was produced for function rather than style, but that changed over time. In the 19th century, the first designer sewed a personal label on his garments. Many designers were making the same kind of clothing at the time, but this was the first step toward designer branding.

Interesting Periods of Fashion

Getting a masters degree in history online will help you really dive into the history of fashion and its many phases. Fashion exploded when designers were given some importance. People began to understand the beauty of design and began to wear clothes to express themselves. One of the most important periods of fashion was referred to as the Gold Age of French fashion, which began somewhere in the 1920s. This was the era of the flapper style and the time when Coco Chanel exploded in the industry.

Another interesting era of fashion was the 1960s, which saw a rise in progressive looks but most importantly a rise in subculture styles. This was a time when young people made a big impact on fashion. The center of fashion was still in Paris, but there was no denying that subcultures and youths were going to form their own rebellious look that was outside the norm. This is a trend that has not really slowed down because there is always a new style that teenagers cling on to, even today.

Fashion can teach a person about society or a particular person, especially today. Fashion expresses feelings, personalities, and ideals, which definitely gives those who pay attention a lot to chew on and ponder.
