The Glamour of the Fashion Industry

The fashion industry is an exciting, glamorous business and appears to have an allure to every fashionista from all over the world. The competition is stiff and one must work extra diligently just to get his/her foot in the door. There are internships in major US cities such as Los Angeles and NY and every fashion student clamors to receive that "Yes, you're hired to work as an intern without pay, however, the rewards of experience outnumber getting paid." Now that is fantastic for a new grad but what about the people who want to make a career change to the fashion industry after working years in another profession? Should they intern without pay and be a middle aged gofer? I don't think that would be the best step developmentally.

I understand how hiring managers want to employ newly graduating fashion students who have fresh ideas and want to conquer the world. However, there is a lot to be said about more mature, aspiring men and women trying to break into the industry as well. They are highly dependable, reliable, stable, professional, organized, intelligent and most importantly, have a love and natural flair of the fashion industry. Should that person be overlooked just because of age? They also have creative ideas. A new grad is more likely to work at a company to gain experience then he/she will move on to something bigger and better. Again, that is perfectly acceptable and understandable but that is to be expected when a company is only looking for young, aspiring fashionistas.

So what is the solution to a mature person who is passionate about the fashion industry, has a natural talent and would be a great asset to any fashion house? I believe every person, regardless of age, backround, etc. should be given a fair chance to work in an industry that is flourishing and is always in need of new ideas and creativity. Once we as a society stop putting limitations on people and begin thinking outside the box, then our office relationships, communication and overall company effectiveness will be enhanced and we will see substantial growth in all areas of our lives.

No one should 'intern'.
The industry does have a propensity to like young & gullible.
Every intern hears the same old song and dance routine ' we'll introduce you to everyone..soon you'll be a star'.
Because of the recession and the tremendous hit that fashion has taken, they are using interns more than ever. All part of 'cost cutting effectiveness.'
Let's face it, this industry was not born out of charity.

If one is hired for a position, one is to be paid.
Adults are to be paid an adult salary.
I was on an interview once where i was asked what my expectations were.
my answer was: ' realistic but adult. i'm not a teenager working for jeans and itunes giftcards'.
