The Dopest Fashion Shades in the Midwest: OMG!

by Chevaun Roux/Nicole Davis

With a name like OMG! Shades it seems like this creative duo need little more explaining… but it is worth taking a dive into the funky and fresh insights from a pair of surprising and imaginative designers who have taken fashion into their own hands and ended up with products that are stylistic and challenging the rules of convention… or as the duo like to put it- ‘Swagtastic’.

This pair of inventors, Amillia, 27, and June, 31, first began their journey down designer lane when they started mind altering a whole lot of shades which they liked, but knew could use a little enhancing. Through trail and error and a bit of inventive intuition they began to create sunglasses that were daring, bold and a complete run away from the conventional. By sporting their own goods they created a buzz and interest around what they wearing and realized that there was a potentially a fashion future in what they were doing.  A local store, MA-Jolie took them in (or, more accurately, “fell in love with them”) and the ladies realized that could begin really selling their goods, and so the wheels of their design venture truly began to turn.

Both being born and raised in Milwaukee there was an undeniable sync and similarity in the women’s style, they knew that they would be able to undertake this venture together. With both their styles being totally innovative, Amillia saying, “My personal style is setting my own trends, I like to add different piece together that look good on my body type” and June throwing around that ever appropriate ‘swagtastic’ again. Although they have no prior education and work in the fashion field they seem to have a firm grasp around what it means to create and present fashion to other individuals. Their meaning of fashion is defined as being unique and different, standing out above the rest in your own personal and comfortable way. They wish to see their products make their ways to a number of outlet stores around the world and give back to their own community in whatever way possible. They love the designs of Betsy Johnson and Christian Louboutin as creative accessory counterparts and draw their inspiration from celebrities and one another. The ladies are also currently working on a clothing label to add to their already unique collection available to the public.

The name OMG! Shades comes from the exact reaction they get every time someone sees one of their products; “Oh My Gosh!”. And do not be fooled by the starkingly dark exterior of some of the glasses; “People always ask us if we can see in the shades? Yes you can see! There is no point on having some cool shades that you can not see out of,” says Amellia

These two can take anywhere from two hours to two days to complete a pair and most enjoy getting their hands in and actually constructing the shades. They gain much of their satisfaction out of the reactions people get once they see and experience the sunglasses for themselves, saying that the love people feel for their products is only reflective of the love that they put into them.

Amellia and June feel that in order to remain valid as a fashion designer it is most important to stay true to themselves, their brand, making each piece “unique, dope and of a high quality”. They pass on the wisdom that the dream will always be there so there is no point on giving up on it… and, of course, network! “Networking is the best thing you can do!”

It all started with a simple black pair of shades, added some black lace and a pink bow to the left hand corner and has moved onto a whole new series of products that are new, original, stylish and sharp.
