Do you have a “favourite colour” with respect to clothing? Perhaps a shade your mirror (or spouse) tells you, you look the best in. Most of us do. While we do not usually wear our favourite colour, we consciously pick the shades we think or know, enhance our appearance. These are the colours we prefer to wear most frequently. Chances are you have a set of preferred colours as well – the colours you look the best in.

Turns out your preferred colours do more than just make you look good and feel great. They provide a sneak peak into your personality as well. Colours exert substantial influence over your mood, attitude, and over how others perceive you.

Four common suit colours and what they say about you

So without any further ado, let's see the top-four frequently worn suits and how they make others perceive you:

1. Black

Black is classy, versatile, and timeless. It exudes power and authority. It makes people perceive you as more competent and successful. Black suits are useful for formal occasions, semi-formal events, and just about every time when you want to come of as sophisticated and powerful. True black suits are in fact, a style staple of every man worth their salt because of the sheer sophistication they exude.

Thinking of adding more blacks to your suit collection? A word of caution: be sure black suits suit you. Despite the colour being classy and timeless in appeal and versatile in use, black suits are best worn by people with darker complexion and/or dark hair. It does not work as good for people with lighter complexion or light hair, say red or blonde. This is because the colour creates a stark contrast with everything else you may be wearing – from your dress shirt and socks to well, your complexion and hair.

It should also be remembered that too much black can quickly become overpowering. It can make you look unapproachable.

2. Blue

Ah blue! This is one colour that never fails to impress no matter what shade you choose. From navy blue, which has become the “de facto” colour of business suits, to true blue hue, which adds a dash of freshness and playfulness – blue suits are ideal for both work and play. True blue suits are a considerably recent trend, popularised by Princes William and Harry, Vladimir Putin and other well-known public personalities and politicians.

The colour blue says you are loyal. It shows you are calm, successful, in-control, and straightforward. Navy blue suits are ideal when you want to fit in, and desire to be recognised for the efforts you put in, and not the clothes you put on. True blue suits are ideal when you want to stand out, and desire to be recognised by everything that's unique to you.

3. Grey

Grey easily is, the second most common colour when it comes to suits. Blue being the first one. The three most popular shades of grey when it comes to men's suiting are charcoal grey, Cambridge (or medium) grey, and light grey. All the three shades, as well as any other shades of grey you may choose to wear, show your composed, organised and reliable side.

The neutral colour is a classic and has other advantages as well. Charcoal grey suits for instance, add age to the wearer. Navy blue suits on the other hand, make you look younger. So if you're the youngest member on the board, and want to ensure your lack of experience does not work against you, charcoal grey would be your colour.

4. Brown

Dark brown is the most common shade of brown used in suits. It's a great substitute for black and shows sophistication when worn right. Like black, the colour works best for people with darker complexion and dark hair. At its best, brown colour says you friendly, down-to-earth, and easy-going. At its worst (when worn wrong), it may show you are depressed, disheartened or outright boring. Other popular shades of brown, particularly tan or khaki exude the same feeling work the same way.

These are generalisations of course. A lot will depend on the exact shade of the colour you wear, the colour of the shirt, tie and shoes you wear along with it. Your own complexion and hair colour will also influence how the colour influences your mood and others' perception. However, knowing the psychological impressions the colour of your suit creates on others will help you plan your attire better when going for an interview, meeting a client, giving a presentation, asking for a raise, or simply trying to fit in.
