Stately and Elegant in Kanjivaram Silk Sarees

Kanjivaram silk is one of the most widely known silk sarees in India and is native to the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. Also known as Kanchipuram, it is almost synonymous with the gamut of South Indian sarees because of its unmatched popularity. What distinguishes this type of saree from all the other types is the sheen of the fabric and its high durability. Its durability is enhanced by its richness and fine finish.

The popularity of sarees in this silk rose enormously in the 18th century.

Kanjivaram silk is produced from the mulberry silk worm, which is known for producing one of the finest varieties of silk in the world. The heaviness of this saree comes from the double warp and double weft weaving method.

The borders and pallav of the Kanjivaram saree are distinctive and heavy. They are embroidered using fine threads of either gold. In cases where silver is used, it is coated with gold later, as no Kanchipuram saree will ever be embellished with anything but gold. The needlework of the embroidery is very fine and firm, with tight secure stitches. The Kanchipuram silk saree features certain motifs that are peculiar to this type. Because this saree initially came about, and is still most popularly worn, for religious purposes, the patterns and designs on this saree are derived from the pictures seen on the temple walls that reflect scenes from the scriptures. Other mythological characters can also be commonly seen on the Kanchipuram saree. Recent varieties have incorporated different patterns and motifs such as parallel lines known as Thandavalam, among others.
