From casual chic to romantic ruching to rockstar goddess, for Spring 2010 designers went 31 flavors on dresses and nothing is vanilla. Dresses go all out in prints, leather, jerseys, lingerie lace and in all shapes or forms. From the body con to the tent… let’s break it down to get dressed up.Ruche

From Burberry to Thakoon, ruching appeared in various collections adding texture and interest. Designers used ruching in all-over silhouettes mixing in vertical and horizontal sections or as overlays to provide depth between prints and solids. Touches of ruching also appeared in straps and sleeves or as intricate knots.T-Shirt Dresses

The T-shirt dress has evolved way past its roots of Fruit of the Loom and into casual chic. They were shown in liquid metallics, sheers, prints, with messages and even in reptilians. Silhouettes ranged from fitted to relaxed with voluminous sleeves or completely sleeveless. Details also include functional pockets and cowl necks. The Goddess

Getting dressed up can mean looking like a goddess or a rockstar or in this case, both. Designers took the idea of the Grecian gown and gave it a spin with fluid metallic drapery, jerseys, chiffons, and prints. From short to super short to floor-grazing, the goddess dress showed the original one-shoulder trend as well as bold shoulder embellishments. Possibly the best of the bunch, Givenchy and Balmain’s interpretation took the historical gown into 2010 with a fresh edge.Body Con

No one does body con better than Herve Leger, but this season the competition gets stiff. Designers show the 50’s form-fitting dress in nudes and sheers, with contrasting macramé knots and mixed materials. Body con dresses are consciously built with corsets to help create the perfect curves.Tent Dress

Tents may not sound like the most flattering, but imagine easy, breezy, beautiful Spring. Shoulders are simple while the skirts are full and flowing, ranging from short to long lengths. Hems were shown in tiered layers and asymmetrical dramatic feels. As the perfect Spring dress, they were shown in prints and colorful variations.Asymmetrical

Last year, asymmetry started off with single-shoulder dresses and unbalanced necklines. This season, designers continue the trend but take it a step further creating asymmetrical hem lines. Short-in-front and long-in-back graced the runways with dramatic flair in chiffons and lux materials. Look for your LBD to have asymmetrical details for an easy update.Volume

It’s always fun to crank up the volume. Dresses were shown in full voluminous silhouettes or with larger-than life details. A silver lamé parachute dress appeared in Rick Owen’s collection while Valentino used ruffles to add life to his. Designers used solid colors to monochrome geometric patterns to create more energy and dimension.Coat Dresses

Once upon a season or so ago, coats and trench coats took inspiration from dress silhouettes. Now fast forward to Spring 2010, and the dress and coat merge as one. Burberry’s famous trench transforms into a beautiful ruche coat dress silhouette belted to perfection. Other collections showed dresses with exaggerated collars, self-material belts, brass buttons, and lady-like silhouettes. The winter coat has made its way into the season-less territory.—Annette
