As much as we hate to admit it, nobody has completely flawless skin. Each of us have our own skin problems, with some being so common that they border on being universal. Fortunately, many of these problems can be covered up if they can’t be avoided altogether.

Acne

Acne is a problem that commonly affects adolescents and young adults, and while it is potentially embarrassing, the good news is that most people grow out of it. In the meantime, you can keep acne under control by washing your face with a facial cleanser twice a day, applying a moisturizer to keep your skin from getting too dry, and using makeup sparingly during a breakout. If your acne is getting particularly severe, there are over-the-counter medications and even prescription drugs and treatments that can treat severe acne and lessen the appearance of scars. Ask your doctor for more information.

Rosacea

Rosacea may not be a life-threatening condition, but like severe acne, it is a source of embarrassment for those who live with it. The best ways to control rosacea all involve prescription medication, but you can prevent many flare-ups by simply paying attention to what has triggered them in the past. Rosacea is often triggered by stress, exposure to the sun, foods such as yogurt and cheese, and alcohol consumption. Everyone has their own triggers, and paying attention to your own is the key to preventing a rosacea flare-up. You should also always wear sunscreen whenever you spend a significant amount of time outdoors and avoid using skin care products that contain alcohol.

Sunburn and Melanoma

Both sunburn and melanoma are associated with too much exposure to the sun. You probably know to bring some sunscreen with you if you’re going to the beach or otherwise spending a lot of time outdoors, but you can burn just as easily if you’re going for a short walk during the day. Some people burn more easily than others, so make sure you apply some kind of sunscreen to your skin if this applies to you. Don’t forget to wear a hat to give yourself some shade on particularly sunny days.

As for melanoma, that can be prevented to some degree by staying diligent about protecting yourself from the sun. You should also keep a close eye on your skin as you get older. If you notice a mole that wasn’t there before or you think a mole you have is growing or changing color, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Melanoma can often be treated by dermatologists like Asheboro Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center, but it needs to be caught early enough to do so.
