Silk: Types and Varieties

Silk is a fabric produced from silk threads that are extracted from silk worms in a process called sericulture. Its is known as one of the richest fabrics in the world and is characterized by luster and shine that is a direct result of the weaving process. The prism like structure of the weave refracts light, thus enabling silk to take on more than its original hue.

There are five states that contribute majorly to the silk production of the country. From south India, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu take the lead while the other two prominent contributors are Jammu and Kashmir along with West Bengal. Silk is also produced in other states in India and it occupies prime place in religious celebrations and festivities like weddings. Everything from sarees, salwar kameez, lehenga choli, kurta pajama, sherwani, mojaris and accessories like purses and handbags can also be created using silk.

There are numerous varieties and types of silk dresses that can be found in India. These can be differentiated on the cocoon the silk fiber is extracted from, the weaving technique and the patterns that have been imprinted or embroidered on them. Garad silk, Kanjivaram silk, Pochampally silk, Garad silk, Banarasi silk, Mysore silk, Matka silk, Jamawar, Murshidabad silk, Bangalore silk, Mulberry silk, Angora silk, Sournachuri silk, Raw silk, Silk embroidery, Tussar silk, Muga silk, Eri silk, Kosa silk, Pat/Paat silk, Dharmavaram silk, Narayanpet silk, Bhagalpuri silk, Cot silk and Upadda silk.

Silk is often paired with precious jewelry in gold, jaded with precious and semi precious stones, as the fabric is meant to be used as a luxury item.
