Rollerblading Paynesville couple ties the knot

The story of Breanna Hess and Tanner Evans, both of Paynesville, begins with a friendship between the two during their high school years. Both attended Paynesville High School. Evans graduated in 2011 and Hess the following year.

During the summer of 2011, they spent a lot of time with mutual friends and also one-on-one with each other, rollerblading for the most part, Evans said.

Bride-to-be Breanna Hess, left, and groom-to-be Tanner Evans are looking forward to creating new memories together as a married couple.

“We just hung out together, and it all kind of aspired from there,” he said.

When he asked Hess if she wanted to be his girlfriend, he said, she had given him a flat “no.” A few days later, she asked him if he wanted to be her boyfriend.

“She came to her senses,” Evans said jokingly, but said he gave her a resounding “yes.”

“It was a definitive answer,” he said. “I wasn’t going to beat around the bush.”

Evans said their friends weren’t at all surprised when he and Hess started dating, given what good friends they already were and how much time they spent with each other.

Hess said she fell in love with Evans for his personality.

“He has a heart of gold,” she said. “He would do anything for me.”

“The most I appreciate about her is how caring she is,” said Evans. “I think very highly of that quality.”

When it came time to ask Hess for her hand in marriage, Evans first approached her father, Dale Hess. He said he expected to get a witty remark from Dale because, Evans said, he can be a bit of a jokester.

Dale gave his blessing and he and Evans decided to keep it a secret for Hess’ mom, Linda, so Hess could tell her in person after the proposal.

Finding “just the right ring” wasn’t a quick decision on Evans’ part. As Hess had pinned various pictures on her Pinterest wall, including different rings she liked, Evans said he looked at those for quite some time to get a sense of what kind of ring Hess would like.

“I had no idea he was watching my Pinterest,” she said.

The ring he finally decided to get was a twisted band, white gold with a cushion cut diamond with a halo around it.

“The ring was perfect,” said Hess. “It was everything I imagined it would be.”

The proposal to Hess turned out to be a little trickier than Evans said he first anticipated.

“I wanted it to be a complete surprise to her,” he said.

The couple traveled to Mexico for spring break in 2015. It was their second time there and even though part of Evans’ family accompanied them, she said she suspected nothing.

Two days later, on March 10, 2015, before supper time, the two took a romantic walk on the beach. Evans said he stopped and pretended he had sand in his shoes. Instead, he went down on one knee with the ring in hand and proposed.

Though surprised at the timing, Hess said “yes.”

“If I’d want anyone marrying my daughter, it would be him,” said Linda.

Evans said he can’t wait to be able to call Hess his wife.

“She means everything to me,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to go a day without her.”

Planning for the upcoming wedding is under way. Hess said she, Linda and her best friend, Greta Keller, handle most of the details.

“I just let her do whatever she wants it to be,” said Evans.

Hess said they’ve decided to go with a shimmering champagne color as a theme for their wedding. While she’ll be in prom dresses, the groom will wear a khaki colored tuxedo.

Evans said his best friend, Tanner Caldwell, will be his best man at the wedding. He, as well, will be wearing a khaki colored tuxedo.

Hess said she will have five bridesmaids: Maid of Honor, Greta Keller, Kenzie Goenner, Jenny Heiserich, Chloe Flannigan and Evans’ sister, McKenna Evans.

Hess said her niece Kylee Hess, 6, will be her junior bridesmaid and that 3-year-old Harper Miller will be the flower girl at the wedding.

The wedding is set for Sept. 10 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.

Hess currently works as a certified nurse assistant (CNA) at a local senior care center. Evans manages client care development from home for a pharmaceutical business. When not working, the two said they enjoy being outdoors, running, rollerblading, fishing, hunting and spending time with family

Hess and Evans said they’ve decided to wait a couple of years to have children. While Hess is thinking four or five children and Evans is thinking three, Linda said 10.
