Rich Motifs on Regional Sarees

Regional sarees from India are some of the richest in terms of design and boast of some of the most unique and original patterns. However, in a land so vast there are certain types of Indian ethnic sarees that are more common than others. Some of the lesser known regional variants of sarees include Kota sarees from Kota in Rajasthan, Muga Silk sarees from Assam, Baluchari sarees from Bishnupur in West Bengal, Gadwal sarees from Telengana and Andhra Pradesh, Tanchoi sarees from Uttar Pradesh, to name just a few.

Here’s a look at the motifs that are popular in some of these regional sarees.

Kota Sarees

The most common patterns seen in the weave of these saris are tiny squares. These squares are known as khats and they can be woven in both cotton and silk. However, gota patti work, mirror work as well as bandhani prints can also be commonly seen on such saris.

Baluchari Sarees

Made in colors that contrast the base color of the saree with the designs, the most common motifs on these sarees are usually scenes from the Mahabharat and Ramayana, two of the most sacred Hindu texts. In the colonial era of India’s history, the most common motif on this saree was a square with a feather in it. These motifs can be created with colored thread as well as zari threads.

Gadwal Sarees

The border commonly has thin strips of zari running through it with a chain of triangles lining the upper-side of the border. The pallu itself is the canvas for exquisite zari work that can be worked into a number of designs.
