FINDING out just ten days before your big day that you've got to organise a new mode of transport for your wedding guests would understandably stress most brides and grooms out.

But for newlyweds Gemma, 25, and Clayton Robinson, 28, the hitch actually helped give them the "perfect" wedding.

The couple married at the end of Southend pier on Saturday, but repair work meant the train was unable to run.

Instead, the whole wedding party was transport up and down the 1.3mile long pier on electronic golf buggies.

Mrs Robinson, from Southend, said despite her initial concerns she went on to have the dream wedding she always wished for.

She said: “We had a call ten days before the wedding telling us we had no train. I wasn’t worried but Clayton was, he was in a right state and really stressing.

“But they pulled out all the stops to make it absolutely amazing for us. The buggies were so much fun.

“Sands, where the reception was, went above and beyond and even liaised with the pier and made sure everything was sorted, that the buggies were arriving on time and everything went to plan.

“The one annoying thing was that my family had to get there at 11.30 and the wedding didn’t start until one.”

Talking about the big day, she added: “It couldn’t have gone any better. It was the perfect day.

“Everyone that we spoke to agreed with us that the buggies made the day. It was really cool.

“It was everything and more that we wanted. I want to go back and do it all again.

“The staff were amazing. They handled the situation really well.”

The ceremony was held at the end of the pier, before the wedding party made its way to Sands restaurant, on Western Esplanade, for the reception.

Mrs Robinson believes other planned pier weddings will be moved to other locations- making her big day even more special.

She said: “I spoke to the registrar and they said they couldn’t move us because it was so close to the wedding.

“It is obviously quite expensive with the buggies and they had to close the pier for a couple of hours to get us all up there.

“The pier train is due to be closed for another ten weeks so any weddings in that time they are trying to move to another venue.”

When asked why she chose to get married on Southend Pier, the 25-year-old told the Echo: “I don’t really like church weddings and I’m not religious. I fell in love with the pier. It took a while to convince my other half. It was unheard of, not many people do it.”
