Performance Art Meets Fashion Presentation in Shanghai

By throwing in theatrical elements and a wild array of colors, independent design brand Celia B definitely delivered one of the more memorable shows at Shanghai fashion week this year.

The event was set within the sleek interiors of the hedonistic Bar Rouge—or God’s blind spot, as I like to call it—a venue usually synonymous with blasting house music, glaring lights, scantily clad girls, and untamed levels of testosterone. But not this time, and as a large crowd of fashionistas gathered in the early hours of Thursday evening, guests found themselves mingling around an empty stage, usually devoted to the club’s twin pole dancers.

Suddenly hushed into silence, we all watched a line of glamorous models clad in crocheted creations, patchwork wools, and zany gypsy colors come strutting out of the wings. However, rather than marching down the elevated walkway, they all sat down at one the bar’s tables and opened a bottle of champagne. The girls laughed, sipped their drinks, and chatted merrily away as if it were a regular ladies’ night out, seemingly completely oblivious to the large numbers of people watching their every move. It was different, fun, and really quite mesmerizing.

One by one, the models then stood up and paraded down the venue’s side, showing off the collection, a mixture of West African textiles, glitter, mesh, and other handcrafted fabrics. More patterns appeared and the whole show ended in rapturous applause.

The Celia B brand is powered by the personality of Celia Bernardo, a wonderfully eccentric Spanish designer who previously worked at Inditex before deciding to go it alone in the world of independent fashion.

Her unique designs, which definitely have an ethnic tribal aesthetic, have already succeeded in garnering considerable international attention. Outspokenly anti-globalization, Bernardo likes to travel to remote parts of the world, collecting textiles, handcrafts, and inspiration from marginalized communities and then blending them into something striking and very contemporary. Also read here:sheindress.co.uk vintage prom dresses
