Packing Essentials For Moving To A New Country

Packing to move to a new country can be quite an emotional experience. It is more than just packing up all your life into some boxes, bubble wrap and duct tapes. It is a fresh start off in a new place, culture and people. The emotional roller coaster can make the packing process quite hectic so it is a good idea to start off by creating a checklist for essentials, so that you can begin your packing with those and slowly take it from there.

Passport And Immigration Documents

The most important thing for you to enter any country is your passport. Make sure your passport is up to date and has adequate empty pages for stamping. To be on the safe side, it is a good idea to have a passport which is valid for at least six months to one year after your travel date. Along with that, you will also be required to carry your visa, receipts and any other immigration document necessary for the move.

Paperwork For Education Or Job

Most immigration visas would require you to provide a proof of employment or acceptance into an educational institution in the host country. Therefore, keep these papers handy and on you, in person all the time while traveling and until you have reported at your school or job. If you have a host family or relative that you will be staying with, you will also need to carry a proof of that, usually in the form of a letter from the host.

Medication And Health Certificates

Depending on the countries that you are traveling from and to, you might be required to get yourself vaccinated against certain diseases. During immigration you would be asked to produce a proof of such vaccination and/or certificate of fitness from a licensed medical practitioner. If you are under any regular medication, make sure you carry a supply of the medicines, and their prescription so that you do not run out before you can figure out things and manage to visit a doctor. Emergency medicines such as epi pens, inhalers etc should always be handy.

Gadgets, Chargers And Adapters

Electronic gadgets are not only expensive, they are also extremely hard to replace as they often contain valuable data. Thus, make sure you pack all your gadgets with extreme caution to ensure that no damage can come to them in transit. Wrap in cloth, bubble wraps, use packing peanuts if needed and pack them away from liquids. Carry all your necessary chargers, power banks, plugs and cables as well. It is safe to take an international adapter as well.

Appropriate Clothing and Miscellaneous Items

Do not pack your entire wardrobe but make sure you carry adequate and appropriate clothing with you for different seasons and occasions. If you are moving with pets or small children, take adequate supplies of their food and other necessary items so that you can transition smoothly. Try to not leave behind items that are heirloom or hold special emotional value to you as these are the little things that will make a foreign country home.

Last, but not the least, you should always carry adequate cash in the currency of the country that you are moving to, along with exchange receipts.
