Jason Wu is living up to his reputation as one of the most important young designers of the moment. Gaining instant notoriety for creating first lady Michelle Obama’s inauguration gown, the dress and his name became immediately recognizable from Wall street to Main street.
This time Wu has crafted his own version of lavish luxury for fall winter 2011, finding fashion inspiration in a series of photos taken of the 25 year restoration at the palace of Versailles. Calling his latest collection “baroque American sportswear,” Wu uses fifteen types of French lace, Swaroski crystals and paillettes to underline the feeling of opulence.
The primarily color palate being black and white is enhanced with the seasons stand out hues cherry red, mustard yellow and cobalt blue, while Wu’s precision tailoring is unmistakable from his form fitting tuxedo jackets, sleek overcoats with lace paneled sleeves to the high waist pants reminiscent of 1940’s Hollywood.
