don't you think that by 2011 bosses/companies should make asking for a pay increase obsolete?
if an employee is doing a good job..and is obviously enjoying their work & their performance is up to par..
then a raise or salary increase should be a given.
the way it is structured now..it's almost like a child asking for more in their weekly allowance and demonstrating all the extra things they've done to justify that,.
companies have to stop playing this game.
it's their responsibility to provide a salary that is dignified...and appropriate.
management should be attuned to an employee's performance..
and it should just be increased..no questions asked.
people are working hard enough today..to expect them to schedule a meeting to speak about increase in wages is wrong.
all the rules need to be broken.
You're probably right - and in an ideal world we could depend on our employers to make this automatic. Unfortunately salary negotiations are still a very relevant part of working life for most of us. I come from the school of thought that says "you can't expect what you don't ask for". In junior level positions especially, its hard to know the boundaries when it comes to negotiation. It can be intimidating and even unfair at times but its still necessary. Its a well documented fact that women in particular make 78 cents to a mans dollar largely in part to their unwillingness to speak up and ask for their salary adjustment. So until we can all work in an ideal corporate world, these skills are still important to learn.
