Here's a guide to buying some great gifts for mom without having to resort to the old cliches or the 'safe' gifts.

Money isn't the object

A lot of people tend to try and spend big on a gift for mom; the feelings behind this are of course truly sentimental but remember that money is not the key to expressing love for mom. When buying gifts for her, keep a simple rule in mind; don't spend more than you can afford and more than you need to.

The gift should make mom feel special, it should make her feel loved and it should never come off as if money is the equivalent of a child's love. On that note, try not to get into any sibling rivalry. Attempts to out do your brother or sister on a mother's day gift will leave your mom with something really expensive and incredibly useless.

Frugality isn't a sin

Frugal gifts aren't a bad idea for mom. Don't think that frugality is cheap, you're the only one who puts a price on mom's love, your mom will love whatever you get her (as long as it isn't used to drill holes with or needs to be fed).

If you're using store points or coupons to help fund  gifts for mom, it's no big deal. Go coupon fishing when you've decided on a gift for mom. The last thing any mother would want is for her child to have yet another bill that they can't pay.

The little pleasures in life

You might want to wine and dine mom, buy her a new summer wardrobe or maybe take her on a nice vacation but all of it is way out of budget. That doesn't mean you have to resort to buying overpriced flowers that might not even be as good as they look on the website and will die in a week. Think of something simple that your mom enjoys doing. Does she have a craze for something? Try mothers day gift baskets; you might find something that's perfect for her. Does she like to live and eat healthy? Try mothers day fruit baskets or fruit bouquets. There's nothing like the indulgence of fresh chocolate dipped fruit to make mom happy.

Be sure

If you decide on something like a dress,clutches, perfume or sterling silver jewelry, make sure you know what she likes. Don't buy the wrong size, color or brand for her, it shows the highest level of inconsideration.
