Matka silk is made from waste Mulberry silk and is one of the many handloom silk fabrics found in India. This fabric is woven in all four corners of the country. Kashmir in the north and Karnataka in the south are the main producers of this fabric, although Gujarat and West Bengal are also invested in its weaving.

Matka silk fabric comes from a thick yarn taken from the same silkworm that is used for the production of raw silk. The thickness of the yarn makes for some irregularities in the finished product, but that stands as a testament to the beauty of handloom textiles. The thickness of the finished textile can be controlled by the amount of yarn used, which in turn determines its usage. For instance, the finer varieties are used to make sarees while the denser ones are used in home furnishings etc. The finer variety is lightweight, unfussy and easy to carry.

To look at, Matka silk has a slightly shimmery finish. It is slightly rough to the touch and is considered one of the best fabrics to sew on, despite irregularities in the weave. Matka silk sarees are among the more popular silk varieties found in the urban areas, especially in socialite circles. The fact that it is an economical variety of handloom silk with a lot of visual and physical texture makes it the preferred urbane ethnic garment. The common patterns that are seen on Matka silk sarees comes from the use dual colored yarns woven in thin striations. However, embroidery on this fabric is just as popular. Besides sarees, Matka has also been used heavily in the making of suits, jackets, dresses and furnishings.

This fabric has been popularized by world renowned fashion designers and their ethnic Indian collections. Many Bollywood celebrities have also been seen sporting them.
