They say that a woman’s career takes a back seat when she decides to go the family way. Now try telling model Carol Gracias that!

Gracias is one of India’s top super models who has had her fair share of newsworthy stories. She shot to fame after her infamous “wardrobe malfunction” incident, which contrary to rumors, did not stop her from continuing her career. She continued to walk the ramp for several designers and has often been termed as the most recognizable face in the world of Indian fashion.

Gracias got married in February 2013 to long time beau Samuel Ziza and moved to Goa. She announced her pregnancy in early 2016 and stopped walking the ramp temporarily. However, six months into her pregnancy, in April 2016, Gracias got a call from her good friend who wanted her to walk the ramp for a Gaurang Shah show. Gracias told him that she was expecting a child and assumed he would refuse to have her walk the ramp. But to her surprise, he told her that Gaurang would be more than happy to have her walk for him, without worrying about her bump.

Gracias decided to walk the ramp, at the Mumbai show to inspire other women. Donning a bright green and purple saree with minimal makeup and jewellery, Gracias was a sight to behold. The saree itself was exquisite, but what added to the appeal was the ruffled blouse. Carol completed the look by tying her hair in a bun and adding a traditional Gajra on top. She looked nothing short of stunning, and one could hardly notice her bump at all!

Although a few tabloids did question her decision to walk the ramp while pregnant, Gracias addressed the media and told them that she was doing it to inspire women of her generation and show them that it is fine to pursue your career regardless of whether you are married, pregnant, or at any other point in your life.

This trend, however, is not a new one, as models all over the world have walked the ramp sporting their lovely baby bumps. There is no such apparent stigma associated with it in the Western culture where women are free to make their own choices without being questioned. It is up to them to decide what they wish to do with their bodies and how they choose to live their lives. A thought that we must pay heed to, since Indian society is transforming and ever- evolving.

Back home in Bollywood, a heavily pregnant Kareena Kapoor Khan recently walked the ramp at the Lakme Fashion week for Sabyasachi and furthered the belief that it is great for women to feel comfortable with their bodies. She nailed the look, and might we add, the pregnancy is making her glow! Sabyasachi’s muse definitely won hearts across the country.

The message here is quite clear, no matter what phase of life a woman is in, she will always manage to look graceful as long as she feels it herself. Don’t let anybody else dictate the way you must dress or feel about yourself. Your beauty will shone even brighter, when you are truly comfortable in your own skin!
