UNNECESSARY EXPENSES
When you first begin your journey as a model, it is easy to get carried away with the number of different things you can do. It may seem like a good idea to splurge on classes and expensive modelling photoshoots. While modelling classes are an excellent way to network and make connections in the industry, they are in no way a necessity for any modelling career. Moreover, expensive photoshoots with professional photographers, studio lights, and extensive makeup and costumes are not a necessity when you are first stepping into the industry. Modelling agencies and scouts look more at things like bone structure, posture, and your ability to work your angles well, which do not require such professional setups.
CORRESPONDENCE
The way that you begin your communications with potential agencies can say a lot about how you will behave if they do enter into a contract with you. Making a good first impression is very important, but it is also equally important to maintain that impression. Always have excellent lines of communication, and maintain professionalism. It is better to be early for meetings than late and to send emails before the deadline. Excuses or lapses, especially in the initial stages, will be certain black marks on your reports. Make sure your communication also sounds professional at all times, by keeping emails crisp, to the point, and very polite.
BAD PORTFOLIOS
While professional shoots are not a necessity, some models tend to take their portfolio too casually and send out hastily clicked photos to agencies. This is a big mistake since most agents use these to make their entire hiring decision, and the snapshots or digitals are your entire resume. Making sure your photographs are in focus, well shot, and highlight your best features, is a definite prerequisite.
LIMITING EXPOSURE
We cannot stress enough on the importance of putting yourself out there as much as possible when you start your modelling career. Get as much exposure and as many scouts as possible, and send out your portfolio to anyone who may be interested. Remember that there is a specific market which will work for you, but you are not in charge of that decision. Until you find your place, keep experimenting with an open mind and without any reservations.
GIVING UP
Some models tend to give up on their modelling dreams very early on simply because they don’t see immediate results. Keep in mind that it is a competitive industry, and there are always opportunities waiting to be found. If you feel like you are working hard but don’t seem to be succeeding, consider talking to more people in the industry, increasing your networking skills, and sending out your modelling portfolio to more agencies. Widening your scope is very important, and something that a lot of models tend to miss. It is important to stay open-minded and unbiased throughout your modelling career. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket and place too many expectations on specific agencies or scouts, and try your luck everywhere.
