Men's Leather Jackets - Essential Style Guide

The style of your jacket is very personal. We all like different things when we’re looking into buying a jacket. Personally, you can’t beat the leather biker jacket, they’re classic, stylish and just all around cool to wear. They can go with any outfit you could think of and be worn with style. But of course, there are a few more to choose from than just the biker jacket, so here at Idle HQ we’ve narrowed it down to four key styles that we feel that every man should own (or at least one of them).

1. Biker

I don’t know if I’ve said this before but the biker jacket is my favourite style of leather jacket. Here at Idle HQ most of us own this classic staple and we love them to bits. Their classic styling and shape make them a nice form fitting jacket that can be worn casually or dressed up for a more formal event.

If you want to go all out and pay top dollar for a leather jacket then go for the original. Schott NYC have some top quality biker jackets. For a retro inspired look team a biker jacket with a plain white tee, a pair of raw denim jeans and some high top Converse. You’ll be the modern day Danny Zuko looking stylish and classic, it doesn’t get much better than that.

If the budget is a bit tighter then worry not, you can always find a biker jacket that will fit your needs. Check out our biker jackets section which has jackets of different styles, colours and price ranges. For a more formal look team it with a white button down shirt and a pair of black trousers; a great smarter look that has a bit of an edge.

2. Bomber

Hollywood icons such as Michael Caine and Steve McQueen have sported an array of bomber jackets that have kept them in the style stakes for decades.

For something a little bit different then try a suede bomber jacket. Teamed with a plain grey tee and grey trousers you can have a contrasting look that is bang on trend for this season.

Leather bomber jackets are also a great look. Form fitting and classically cut, a leather bomber jacket will be your best friend now that Spring is well under way. Worn with a flannel shirt and a pair of slim legged black jeans and trainers, you can have a bang on trend look this season.

3. Flight Jacket

The flight jacket, much like the biker jacket is steeped in history. We first saw the flight jacket during the first world war when the pilots wore a version of it when they were in the air. They used leather because of its durability and practicality to keep the pilots warm, many were lined with shearling for that extra added bit of warmth. These days the  can be seen on the backs of the trendiest men in fashion and its a great option for a leather jacket.

This one by the world renowned brand Schott NYC is spot on. With its simplistic design it embodies what the flight jacket should be. The smooth leather makes for a different effect when wearing it, giving it a smoother and more sleeker shape. Worn with a pair of lighter blue slim legged jeans and a cream coloured jumper you will have a bang on trend and stylish look this season.

Of course we can’t all afford the massive brands such as Schott, so if your wallet isn’t brimming with cash (mine has cobwebs) then check out our leather jacket section for more options .

4. Varsity

The varsity jacket is something that was born in America. We’ve all seen those movies where the jocks would wear a varsity jacket to solidify their position in various sports teams. They took massive prominence during the 50s and 60s when American colleges would push their team spirit to help them win. These days the varsity jacket is a staple piece of clothing for those who are after something a little different.

A varsity jacket will work great with a plain white tee, a pair of slim legged black jeans and some high top trainers for a sporty yet casual look this season. Check out the rest of our men's jackets to see our whole range of styles and looks that suit your needs.
