Melissa Diamantidi

That's So New YorkThis week I've been a little overwhelmed with designers as I have been emailing around in regards to my online-store which will launch this coming September. I previously began to have thoughts which pondered something along the lines of "Should I give up? I mean, I can't find the designers I want anywhere!" yet this week has been the push I needed as the designers began pouring in from various online-stores and press pieces which I've been flicking through left-right and centre and whilst my hunt for both luxury along with progressive, urban and up-an-coming seems a little challenging as some may question "Can you find all of that from one designer?" I think I might have done just that with my most recent find. Despite the fact that I have labelled many designers as favorites these past couple of months, I have to say that this next find is certainly right up there in my list and despite the fact that I haven't heard back from the designer herself, I'm hanging on the thought that I may at least be considered as a retail opportunity by the label and with me being fairly new to the industry and all with only eight months or so behind me in regards to the blog, I think a consideration is more than favorable in comparison to a straight forward "Why the hell would I want to retail on your store? Get out!" right?

Melissa Diamantidis is the designer behind the Melissa Diamantidi label (yet I'm sure that was pretty obvious to some.) Melissa is currently based in London and although she began working from her London flat when she first established the label back in 2009, she has now moved onto a studio based in West London. When looking at the overall aesthetic of the Melissa Diamantidi label, Melissa's website briefly captions that whilst designing she has one goal; that being to
"encompass versatility and timeless silhouettes, reworked with a contemporary twist and an exquisite sense of individuality" throughout her work. Referring back to my initial focus when on the hunt for designers who I would hope to be considered by in regards to retailing on my soon to be launched online-store, Melissa manages to incorporate both a luxury and progressive aesthetic into her work, giving a modern twist on a seemingly elegant line of cuts (for example, if you take a look at some of Melissa's long sleeved knee-length dresses, she uses the same cut as that of which we would see from designers such as Rad Hourani, a designer who approaches fashion in a modern yet technical way, introducing a concept which may be a little ahead of our time).

The subject I really wanted to focus on is Melissa's Autumn/Winter 2011collection. I always appreciate a good ol' caption next to a collection when it is being presented on a website; primarily because think it's admirable to be able to see the vision the designer had when designing the collection in addition to flicking through a series of images and making your own mind up. Kudos to whoever has the job of captioning each Melissa Diamantidi collection as they have done a superb job; the outcome for the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection reading
"Melissa’s AW11 collection has evolved from a series of prints derived from architectural line drawings - fusing bold, structural lines and organic simplicity in unison with the female form inspired from a collaboration with a talented young architect. The severity of the architectural forms have been taken into the collection’s silhouettes, offset by delicate feminine draping, expressing the harmonic qualities and possibilities of architecture as the perfect canvas for womenswear. Jewellery and bags will echo the three dimensional quality of the prints and structure of the dresses." I think that in this case, everything was spot and the use of the word architectural was more than relevant as that was the word which instantly popped into my mind once I had flicked through a series of the collection images; everything is fairly simple yet at the same time detailed in terms of material and technique, mixing leather with transparent fabrics alongside a series of soft stretch wool fabric.
