Makeup for Whiter Teeth? Yes, Please!

Whitening strips, toothpastes, DIY techniques and permanent discolouration control… there are endless ways to whiten your teeth in the long run, but it might be trickier to instantly get stunning, white results. Whether it’s a first date, job interview or a special event, we all want to have that flawless, white smile. We’ve got some good news: there are various makeup tricks that will cancel out discolouration and make your teeth appear white, strong and healthy.

Let’s face it: whitening your teeth can take a long time, and if you have sensitive teeth, there’s a chance that you can’t even consider these options. Although these makeup tips aren’t long term solutions, they are perfect for unique occasions or if you would like to boost your confidence.

Before applying makeup…
…ensure you have a smooth canvas to work with. Gently scrub your lips and apply a clear, moisturizing lip balm before the actual shade. No matter how white your teeth are, chapped lips can ruin the overall makeup look.

Frosty Shades
The most popular tip is to take a look at your lipstick’s undertone. Although warm shades can be tempting, they will only emphasize the yellow tones in your smile, a shade with a bit of blue can absolutely help you out. Think berry shades instead of burgundy and traditional Barbie pinks instead of coral and orange lip colours. That doesn’t mean you have to stick with purples! You have a huge colour palette to choose from frosty pink and lilac to crushed berries.

When it comes to application, you can either do a full-coverage, ombre or a gently stained look. For full coverage, we recommend using a lip liner underneath your lipstick to lock everything in place and for a stained look, use a strongly pigmented lip balm and pat it on evenly. To try out something different, you can experiment with the ombre look and use a dark shade on the outer corners and blend it with a darker shade on the centre of your lips.

Our Recommendation:
YSL – Rouge Pour Couture Lipstick
Lancome – Berry in Love Juicy Shaker
Givenchy – Beauty Cushion Kiss
Bite Beauty – Amuse Bouche Lipstick

Classic Red
If you are not that into berry shades or cool-tone pinks, the iconic red lipsticks are still perfect options for you. Applying a true „Russian red” with just a hint of blue will create an elegant and chic look while making your teeth whiter. Similarly with the other lipsticks, make sure the application is smooth.

First use a lip liner first to draw the desired shape of your lips. Gently colour in your lips with the lip liner and then apply a layer of liquid or cream lipstick. The slight blue undertone of the red shades will cancel out the discolouration.

Our Recommendation:
Dior – Matte Fluid Lip & Cheek Velvet Colour
Charlotte Tillbury – Miranda May Lipstick
Maybelline – Dynamite Red Lipstick
Gucci –Iconic Red Lipstick

Glossy Lips
Instead of vivid shades, you can also stick with a simple gloss which will just add that extra plumpness to your lips and a slightly whitening effect. The trick is to avoid orange and golden sparkles. I know, they are pretty popular during this season of the year, but try to find one that has a more watery consistency with a tone of bluish pink to or berry to it.

Our Recommendation:
Dior - Addict Lipgloss
Nars – Turkish Delight Lipgloss
Mac – Clear Lipgloss
Nars - Clear Lipgloss

Rosy Cheeks
It’s also important to choose the perfect blush shade. Don’t simply focus on your lips and look for a rosy or berry shade blush. Besides these colours were super popular this year’s runway shows and will instantly create a pretty porcelain doll effect, they are also known for their whitening effect. Try to keep the warm tones for your eyes and put away the burnt orange and brick red tones. To finish off your blush, make it glowing with a shimmering, silver or pink undertone blush topper.

Our Recommendation:
Mac Blush – Matte Bright Pink
YSL – Scandal Blush & Lips
Bobbi Brown – Brightening Brick
Clinique – Chubby Stick

Daring Eyes
Still didn’t get that gorgeous, white smile you were looking for? If you are not happy with your teeth, keep the focus on your eye makeup and only apply a hint of pink glossy lip balm on your lips. Emphasize your doll eyes with a smokey look, winged matte black eyeliner or a set of false lashes. For special events, experiment with shades of emerald, grey and icy blues, which will make both your eyes and smile brighter.

Our Recommendation:
NYX Smokey Fume Palette
Maybelline Colour Tattoo Shadow
Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow
Bobbi Brown – Smokey Eye Mascara

Don’t forget: even though the focus is on your eyes, make sure your lips are smooth and aren’t chapped by using a sugar or salt lip scrub.

Makeup Don’ts:

Orange Shades – whether it’s your bronzer or lipstick, too orange, gold or warm tones will make your teeth appear a bit more yellow.

Simple Lips – even if you are only applying a tinted balm or gloss, ensure you don’t leave your lips absolutely blank.

Dry Lips – during the fall and winter season, it’s difficult to keep our lips moisturized. Before applying any lip product, exfoliate them.

But most importantly…
These tricks will definitely help you get that Hollywood Glam smile, but whichever look you decide to rock, feel confident and beautiful. Most of us don’t have perfect teeth and that is perfectly fine, so don’t stress too much! Be daring, have fun with any makeup look you like and don’t be afraid to show off your teeth.
