Donna Summer was disco incarnate. She sang it, wrote it, lived it, and wore it. Summer would have been 69 today, and her songs and style are as fabulous and relevant as they were back in the days of Studio 54. So much so, in fact, that an announcement was made earlier this month that a Donna Summer musical about her life and career is coming to Broadway this spring. And just think of the costumes—her wardrobe was all glitter, gold, and, truly, “hot stuff.” Her hits like “Last Dance,” “I Feel Love,” and “On the Radio” made everyone dance, and her onstage presence was the stuff of legend, thanks in large part to her fashion choices. She loved sequins, of course, and leopard prints and embellished heels. She pulled off fans and wacky glasses like no one else. In essence, much of her style defined the disco era.

With New Year’s Eve upon us, there’s no better icon to look to for sartorial inspiration. After all, Summer just wanted to make people sway and smile, and that’s spirit to be in when watching the ball drop with a glass of Champagne in hand. In honor of the inimitable Ms. Summer and her enduring style, here are five New Year’s Eve party ensembles that will have you looking like a diva on the dance floor long past midnight.
