Chances are that you probably have already heard of the term ‘Burkini’ floating in the air. Well, if you haven’t then probably I won’t judge you of living under the rock. So let me elucidate to you all, that burkini connotes the idea of Swim-wear which adheres to the diktats of Islam and is Sharia compliant when it comes to sporting Beach-wear/bathing-suit in public spaces. The idea is to give ample coverage to the female body by not exposing to the naked eyes galore, especially the roving eyes of the men.

For a long time, being a Muslim woman who observed headscarves ,was practicing and was a ‘water-baby ‘ did not go hand as it turned out that there weren’t any Go-To  outfits for Muslim women which helped them keeping in their modest quotient intact.,(Well yeah if you exclude the scuba suit). So the only alternative left was to resort to DIY tricks which we sometimes don’t have time for or turns out odd-fitted. But with advent of Modest swimwear, there’s no looking back.  You’ll notice that there are not only many designers, and Modest fashion companies rolling out designs in Burkini but also catering to the specifics of beach-wear and water sports. A typical modest swim-wear or Burkini is mostly made out of Polyamide with unique water absorbing properties which keep the skin hydrated without getting the body wet. Further, you have multiple variants with a two piece and one-piece swim-wear consisting of a body overall and a modest top and legging variant respectively.

These outfits also sometimes carry pockets and additional head cap as a head cover for the HIjabi sisters to keep their hair covered, when in water. In the age of fat –shaming, anorexic diets and body image issues, modest dressers couldn’t care less about the societal conjecture of a ‘good body’ deemed suitable enough for beaches and water sports. A modest swim-wear not only appeals to a woman of a certain faith but has takers in many faith. A burkini thereby provides ample flexibility to exercise one’s passion, faith, all within the limits of modest-dressing.
